HANDPANS _ WHAT IS

My obsession with the beautiful instrument the Hang began sometime in the 1970's although the instrument wasn't actually invented till the very late 1990s - 20 years later  !

Back in the 70's I was watching an episode of Sesame Street with my sister - it was the part in the show when a person at their workplace was featured  - I had seen doctors, bakers, bricklayers and teachers on one fateful day there was a musician playing the strangest instrument I'd ever seen and I was instantly drawn to it. Later that evening I tried to describe what I'd seen to my parents but they had no idea what meant and so I began watching reruns of sesame street in the hopes of seeing the musician once again but I never did - I also never forgot about that strange instrument with the most beautiful tones

it was  years later I saw a busker in the streets in Brisbane playing a steel drum and realized that this is what I must have seen on TV I was amazed at how inaccurately I had described the instrument all those years ago - For one thing, I thought the shape was convex not concave and I was sure the player had used his hands not  mallets and the sound was nothing like the bell like quality I had imagined

So when in 2001 I happened upon a photograph of someone playing the Hang - I felt an instant kinship with it and when I finally heard its tones I was in love.

Like most people who want a Hang I put my name on lotteries - and even one got through to the second section - but never any further. The makers of  the Hang were not selling Hang or marketing them - so to actually get one seemed impossible but I keep hoping

After 6 years of trying for a Hang, I decided to look at other makers of similar styled instruments and I entered the world of Hangpans

Handpans are all very different - its really not possible to compare one against another

its Swiss  makers ..........created something truely unique in the music world and since then many others have develped their own instruments referred to as Handpan
